Quantock Hills

Country Sport Images

The Quantock Hills are one of the finest ranges of hills in the country, known to many as gods little acre!

In 1956 its was the first place in Britain to be given the prestigious national status of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the section of land called Quantock Common has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.  The Hills cover an area of approximately 12 miles by 4 miles and at the highest point which is Wills Neck is an amazing height of 1260 feet.  At this point you’ll need to pause, as the views that confront you are nothing short of breath taking.  On a clear day you can easily expect to see views of Exmoor, Dartmoor, Mendips, Brecon Beacons and the Blackdown Hills.  The Quantocks are mostly privately owned and are visited by over half a million people per year....

A Positive Future for rural life now wrapped up ‘online’
Countryside enthusiasts will be heartened to read an evocative on-line book that describes the trials and tribulations of a small rural community in Leicestershire over the past eighty years. Called “Exploring a Productive Landscape”, and published by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, this remarkable publication is packed with a priceless collection of amusing and beguiling anecdotes on countryside life in the 1930s complemented by many colour images, fascinating old farming photographs and maps.

Plant a sparkling wine vineyard here in Britain – Really?!

Plant a sparkling wine vineyard here in Britain – Really?!

Vineyards have always been a common part of the countryside for our European neighbours. When a deciding which crop to plant, grape vines are probably fairly high on a landowners list of possibilities. Though reputed to have crossed our shores with the Romans, vineyards have also been a part of the UK’s rural scene, certainly since the Norman Conquest. Now, with English Wine, particularly Sparkling Wine, gaining an enviable reputation and sales worldwide, more vineyards are springing up in the UK’s countryside every year and that’s not confined to the south coast. With economic pressures on other crops, British farmers are increasingly looking at vines as a realistic new source of income.

Cooking Skills Die Out as Young People become 'Heat and Eat' Generation

5 by 25

Cooking skills could die out in a generation
-    Almost 60% of Britain’s 18 – 25 year olds are leaving home without the ability to cook even a simple Spaghetti Bolognese –
-    National youth & parent groups pledge support for new 5by25 campaign -

18th October 2011 - New research released today, following a debate attended by John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning and celebrity chef James Martin, shows that the majority of 18-25 year olds (57%) are leaving home without the ability to cook even a simple recipe such as Spaghetti Bolognese.

The national study marks the launch of a new campaign – 5by25 – which calls for young people to be given the support to master at least five simple recipe dishes by the age of 25 (the time by which most have left home).

Natasha Baker raising the profile for Para Dressage

Natasha will keep us updated of her training, Competitions and commitments as a rider heading towards the Olympics

Its been a brilliant start to 2012, if somewhat busy! Both horses had a quiet Christmas and New Year so it was straight back to it on January 1st as I had a competition with JP the weekend after. They came back really well after their break and were feeling super. We went to Vale View in Leistershire for my 1st competition of the year, it was a qualifier for the Winter Championships. I did two tests on the day, he was a little tense going into the arena but soon settled and we achieved 76% and 72%. I was happy as I knew there were a few little mistakes and plenty more in the tank for later in the year!
